What are dental implants?
When most people think of dental implants, they think of the visible part of the tooth, but the entire implant’s actually much more complex. An implant is a titanium post surgically implanted into the jaw bone to replace a missing tooth’s root. It’s topped with a connector called an abutment that holds a crown, or replacement tooth.
What is the implant process like?
When a patient comes to Dr. Haeri Maybodi for implants, she’ll begin the process with a pre-treatment consultation looking at medical and dental history to determine if a patient is a good candidate for implants.
After a thorough numbing of the mouth, the patient’s gum over the replacement area is opened up and an implant drill is used to create the space in the bone for implantation.
Once the implant is screwed into place in the bone, the gum is closed up and the doctor and patient allow a few months for the implant to heal and securely attach to the bone.
Once it’s ready, Dr. Haeri Maybodi places a post to the implant and takes an impression of the mouth to create the artificial tooth. The artificial tooth is placed to restore function and aesthetics.
Finally, Dr.Haeri Maybodi does follow up care with all her patients with proper maintenance to help ensure a long-lasting implant.
Are implants strong enough to replace missing teeth?
Dental implants are one of the strongest solutions to missing teeth. Because they bond to the jaw bone, they can handle most normal chewing actions and are less prone to breakage and failure. In fact, if the teeth being replaced were weakened, patients may find that their implants are actually stronger than their natural teeth were.
Do dental implants hurt?
