Cavity Fillings Q & A
by Maryam Haeri-Maybodi, DDS

What is a dental filling?

A dental filling is a procedure in which a dentist removes decaying tooth material from cavities and then fills in the area with a material that stops the spread of the decay.

What are the benefits of composite fillings?

Composite fillings are made from a composite resin that’s the same color as the patient’s teeth. This limits much of the risk of amalgam (silver) fillings, including the risk of mercury exposure, while also improving the patient’s aesthetics. Some of the benefits of composite fillings include:

  • Better appearance
  • Ability to reach areas amalgams can’t
  • Use on front teeth
  • Less tooth removal necessary
  • Bond directly to the teeth
  • Increased tooth strength

Because of these benefits, and because of the potential risk of amalgam fillings, Dr. Haeri Maybodi offers composite fillings exclusively at Ocean Breeze Dental Spa. Composite fillings are also called ‘tooth-colored” because they’re the same color as natural teeth.

Do fillings hurt?

The filling procedure shouldn’t cause much discomfort. Prior to a filling, Dr. Haeri Maybodi will numb the area thoroughly. This allows her to drill out the decaying tissue without pain. Sometimes patients experience sensitivity in the tooth after a filling, but this typically goes away within a few weeks.

Do all toothaches require a filing?

We get toothaches for a number of reasons. Toothaches can be caused by cavities, chips or cracks, or even by a food particle lodged deep in the gums. Dr. Haeri Maybodi will find the cause of your toothache and determine if a filling is necessary.

Why are fillings necessary?

If a tooth has a cavity, the patient must get a filling. Otherwise, the cavity will spread. This could lead to infection, bone loss, and tooth loss. Even cavities that don’t hurt need to be filled.

Do fillings need to be replaced?

Older amalgam fillings can sometimes be defective or fall out. Decay around the filling can also occur. Fillings should be replaced when they’re starting to show signs of wearing out. At a patient’s request, Dr. Haeri Maybodi replaces amalgam fillings with tooth-colored fillings to help improve the oral safety and aesthetics.
