Crowns and Bridges Q & A
by Maryam Haeri-Maybodi, DDS
What are dental crowns made from?
Dental crowns can be made from gold, gold alloys, other metal alloys, porcelain, ceramic, composite resin, or a combination of these. Dr. Haeri Maybodi will help you decide which crown is best for each tooth in question.
What can a patient expect from crown replacement?
Most crown replacement is completed after 2 visits to Ocean Breeze Dental Spa. The first visit is to prepare the tooth for the crown. Dr. Haeri Maybodi will numb the area then shape the surface of the tooth to make room for the crown. She’ll also take impressions to ensure the crown is made to the right shape and size. Your second visit will consist of placement and adjustment of the crown for a perfect fit.
What are crowns used for?
Crowns are used to cover damaged teeth to prevent further damage or tooth loss. Crowns can also serve as the connection for a bridge when a patient loses a tooth.
What are dental bridges?
Dental bridges place an artificial tooth in a gap between 2 teeth creating a bridge tooth between them. Unlike implants, bridges aren’t permanently attached to the bone. They’re anchored to the teeth at the sides of the gap for proper support. Every bridge is custom-made to ensure strength, durability and comfort.
When do dental bridges work best?
To fill a gap between teeth the best choice is usually an implant or a bridge. Implants take more time to complete the process, and aren’t right for everyone. Bridges can be installed in a couple of dental visits and may be less expensive than implants. Dr. Haeri Maybodi will help her patients decide whether a bridge or implant is right for their individual needs.
What are the side effects of bridges and crowns?
Bridges and crowns rarely have side effects, but they do require a permanent reshaping of the support teeth. Bridges require the same dental care as the rest of your teeth to help prevent decay and gum disease to the exposed areas of the underlying teeth.
How long do crowns and bridges last?
Dental crowns and bridges are designed to last 15-20 years with proper oral care. Dr. Haeri Maybodi will schedule regular oral hygiene appointments to keep your crowns and teeth clean, and your gums healthy.
